Relationship between the comma theory and Witten’s string field theory
1998
The comma representation of interacting string field theory is further elucidated. The proof that Witten's vertex solves the comma overlap equations is established. In this representation, the associativity of the star algebra is seen to hold. The relationship of the symmetry K in the standard formulation of Witten's string field theory to that in the comma theory is discussed.

Modular fluxes, elliptic genera, and weak gravity conjectures in four dimensions
2019
We analyse the Weak Gravity Conjecture for chiral four-dimensional F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. Extending our previous work on nearly tensionless heterotic strings in six dimensions, we show that under certain assumptions a tower of asymptotically massless states arises in the limit of vanishing coupling of a U(1) gauge symmetry coupled to gravity. This tower contains super-extremal states whose charge-to-mass ratios are larger than those of certain extremal dilatonic Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, precisely as required by the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Unlike in six dimensions, the tower of super-extremal states does not always populate a charge sub-lattice. The main t…
Comment on “Topological invariants, instantons, and the chiral anomaly on spaces with torsion”
1999
In Riemann-Cartan spacetimes with torsion only its axial covector piece $A$ couples to massive Dirac fields. Using renormalization group arguments, we show that besides the familiar Riemannian term only the Pontrjagin type four-form $dA\wedge dA$ does arise additionally in the chiral anomaly, but not the Nieh-Yan term $d^\star A$, as has been claimed in a recent paper [PRD 55, 7580 (1997)].
Holomorphic Aspects of String Theory
1989
A string is a piecewise smooth map of the interval to a manifold M. A closed string is a map of the circle S1 into M. In string theory the strings replace the points of the manifold M as fundamental objects. The enormous amount of work done on quantized string models in physics has been motivated by the hope that the quantum string theory would produce a finite quantized theory of gravity, free of the divergences of the ordinary quantized Einstein theory of gravitation. So far the proof is missing but work is continuing. It has been proposed that some kind of string theory would be the unified theory of all fundamental interactions in physics. However, the fundamental principles of string t…
Topological Insulators from a Chemist's Perspective
2012
Topology and chemistry are deeply entangled subjects, whichmanifests in the way chemists like to think and approachproblems. Although not at first glance, topology allows thecategorizationoffundamentalinherentpropertiesofthehugenumber of different chemical compounds, carving out theunique features of a class of materials of different complexity,a topic which Turro worked out in his treatise on geometricaland topological thinking in chemistry.
Similarity-Based Virtual Screening to Find Antituberculosis Agents Based on Novel Scaffolds: Design, Syntheses and Pharmacological Assays
2022
A method to identify molecular scaffolds potentially active against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) is developed. A set of structurally heterogeneous agents against MTBC was used to obtain a mathematical model based on topological descriptors. This model was statistically validated through a Leave-n-Out test. It successfully discriminated between active or inactive compounds over 86% in database sets. It was also useful to select new potential antituberculosis compounds in external databases. The selection of new substituted pyrimidines, pyrimidones and triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines was particularly interesting because these structures could provide new scaffolds in this field. T…
Internal Test Sets Studies in a Group of Antimalarials
2006
Topological indices have been applied to build QSAR models for a set of 20 an- timalarial cyclic peroxy cetals. In order to evalua te the reliability of the proposed linear models leave-n-out and Internal Test Sets (ITS) approaches have b een considered. The pro- posed procedure resulted in a robust and consensued prediction equation and here it is shown why it is superior to the employed standard c ross-validation algorithms involving multilinear regression models.
Induced unconventional superconductivity on the surface states of Bi2Te3 topological insulator
2017
Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ component. The magnetic field pattern of the junctions shows a dip at zero externally a…
